In honor of Black History Month, we are spotlighting our Public Address announcer Renel Brooks-Moon who is entering her 22nd season with the San Francisco Giants.

Most affectionately known as “Renel,” she received a B.A. in English Literature from Mills College and began her career in Bay Area radio and television broadcasting. In 2000, Renel was honored to be chosen as the Public Address Announcer for the San Francisco Giants as the team found a new home at 24 Willie Mays Plaza. In her remarkable career as the VOICE of Oracle Park, Renel has been a part of many historical moments. She was in the booth for the ballpark’s inaugural Opening Day in 2000, Barry Bonds’ incredible home run chase, Matt Cain’s perfect game and the three World Series Championships. Her voice has become an integral part of the San Francisco Giants fan experience.

Renel has made her own mark on the world of professional sports several times. In 2002, following Game 3 of the World Series, she was recognized by the Baseball Hall of Fame as the first woman to P.A. a World Championship game in any professional sport. In July 2007, she became the first woman to ever publicly address Major League Baseball’s annual All-Star Game, hosted in San Francisco. She rewrote history once again in 2010 when she became the first woman to publicly address a World Series Championship team, AND earned a World Series ring in the process! She earned two more rings following the 2012 and 2014 World Series Championships and joined the team on their visits to the White House to be congratulated by President Barack Obama.

Besides her work behind the microphone, Renel has also made an impact on the community as well. She is a founding member of Friends of Faith, Inc., a non-profit organization that was dedicated to providing assistance to underserved and uninsured Bay Area breast cancer patients. Renel has also served on the board of the San Francisco Giants Community Fund. She is a supporter of Glide Memorial Methodist Church and the Glide Foundation. She serves on the Advisory Board of the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir.

As a result of her remarkable career in media and as the P.A. Announcer of the San Francisco Giants, Renel’s community and professional work has been honored and recognized by many in the Bay Area. In 2005, then Mayor of San Francisco Gavin Newsom, proclaimed May 18, 2005 as “Renel Brooks-Moon” day for her 20 years as a Bay Area media personality and for her community activism.

In 2008, Renel was inducted into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame, receiving the most votes, having been named on more than 27% of all ballots cast.

She is the recipient of two honorary doctorate degrees. In September of 2008, her Alma Mater, Mills College presented Renel with an honorary degree in Arts Literature. In December of 2018, she received a second honorary doctorate in Arts and Science from the University of San Francisco.

In 2017, Renel was honored to MC the historic inauguration of San Francisco’s first Black Female Mayor, London Breed. Renel is an Emmy Award winner as host of the television series “Forever Giants”, and is featured on a limited edition 2020 TOPPS baseball card.
